About the Program
The program began in 1977 as the University Scholars Program, enrolling 20 new students each year. In 1979 a scholarship endowment was created through a grant from the Lyndhurst Foundation, and the program was renamed the Brock Scholars Program in honor of William E. Brock, Jr., a prominent Chattanooga businessman who served for many years on the UC Foundation Board of Trustees. Statistics For 2009-2010 Academic Year •Enrolled: 152 •Avg. High School GPA: 3.9 unweighted (range: 3.19-4.0) •Avg ACT: 29 (range: 23-35) •Avg SAT comp (CR+M only): 1320 (range 1200-1420) •Avg. UTC GPA: 3.75 (range: 3.5-4.0) Majors: •Fine Arts: 7% •Humanities: 27.6% •Social Sciences: 28.4% •Natural Science/Math: 28.9% •Engr./Comp.Sci.:2.6% •Education: 5.3% •Health Professions: 5.3% •Business: 9.9% (Total is greater than 100% due to rounding and to many students with double majors.) In 1987, the program was expanded with the help of a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities to allow more students to enroll each year and to enhance the UHON curriculum. At this point, the program's name was changed to the University Honors Program. Since that time, the program has typically enrolled between 35 and 40 new students each year. With the expanded size of the program, the William E. Brock Jr. Scholarships continue to be awarded to as many UHON students as possible, but now many UHON students receive other types of scholarships.
