NOTABLE ACADEMICS PROGRAMS:
  • EngineeringWith five departments and more than 25 programs, including our world-renowned International Engineering Program, the College of Engineering challenges and prepares students for problem-solving on a global scale. Built around a hands-on, dynamic environment, classroom experiences combine with internship opportunities, student organizations, and an Engineering Living Learning Community to provide the kind of well-rounded education needed in the real world. Disciplines: biomedical engineering, chemical engineering, civil engineering, computer engineering, electrical engineering, industrial and systems engineering, mechanical engineering, and ocean engineering are all accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET. A $150M investment in the Fascitelli Center for Advance Engineering (opened in 2019) and the recent approval of a state bond to build the new Ocean Engineering building at the Bay Campus is giving URI Engineering some of the best engineering facilities in the country.
  • Global Languages and Area StudiesThe Department of Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures offers a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in Global Language and Area Studies (GLAS). Students studying in the GLAS major choose one of three tracks: Arabic Studies, Classical Studies, or Japanese Studies. The Global Language and Area Studies B.A. is designed to allow you to emphasize either language learning or area studies knowledge. The major begins with an introductory course, requires a minimum of four semesters of language, at least one area studies course, and concludes with a project-based capstone that gives you a chance to show off what you have learned about the language and the region. All majors are expected to reach Novice High in their focus language on the ACTFL scale–though most will reach much higher than this–and all will gain a working knowledge of the culture, history, or religion.
  • PsychologyURI offers both a B.A. and B.S. in psychology, giving students flexibility and diverse course options related to their interests. Students studying psychology have the opportunity to engage in exciting field experience, make connections with industry experts, and gain core elements of psychology.
UNIQUE ACADEMICS PROGRAMS:
  • Aquaculture and Fisheries Sciencehe Aquaculture and Fisheries Science program at URI is one of the oldest aquaculture programs in the northeastern United States. The program is designed to prepare you for academic, professional, or technical careers focused on the use and conservation of aquatic animals by humans. The program not only allows students to graduate with a stronger focus on aquaculture or fisheries depending on their career interests, but also to complement this solid foundation with a variety of complementary skills that are directly applicable to the job market (e.g. scientific diving, handling of small boats, business management, entrepreneurship, economics, policy, oceanography, environmental sciences, etc.) through targeted offerings from our program and many other programs at URI.
  • Marine SciencesThe Marine Biology Program involves over 200 students in the B.S. Marine Biology degree program, which is administered by the Department of Biological Sciences. Most of our students are from out-of-state – from 15 states (including Florida, Texas, California, and Hawaii) each year, and from around the world (Germany, Phillipines, India, Netherlands, Mexico, China in the past several year. The Marine Affairs B.A. is an interdisciplinary study of the effective marine and coastal management. Subject areas include management of fisheries and marine ecosystems, coastal management, and maritime transportation and ports. The B.S. program puts a heavier emphasis on science and mathematics, with specialty areas that include: fisheries and marine ecosystems, coastal management, maritime transportation and ports, and ocean policy. This degree provides a strong educational background for continued study in law—especially environmental, fishery, coastal zone, admiralty, and ocean law.
  • Textiles, Fashion Merchandising, and DesignClasses focusing on textiles and the fashion business are complemented with supporting course work in marketing, consumer behavior, sustainability, technology, innovation, and creative skills. This comprehensive course of study will give you a deep understanding of the development, buying, promotion, and selling of apparel and home furnishings. You’ll also gain a full understanding of the global textile and apparel supply chain—from design to the consumer. So, while you can focus your degree on a specific part of the supply chain, you will know them all, and you’ll be equipped to communicate with experts in the fashion world outside your area of concentration. This degree, which offers three concentrations—in fashion merchandising, apparel design, and textile science—serves as a bridge between theory and practice, providing a tremendous opportunity for hands-on learning.
