About This Campus

The University of Puerto Rico at Utuado (UPRU) is the youngest campus of the UPR System. It is a small campus in the Central Mountain Range and one of the few universities in this area. The small class sizes and low student/teacher ratio allows for students to have direct contact with faculty members and personnel. The campus has a variety of bachelor and associate degrees, but it specializes in sustainable agriculture. UPRU is committed to protecting natural resources and it was recently recognized as a "Bee Campus" for its efforts to protect pollinators. Also, by participating in the Climate Leadership Network, the institution commits to taking action on climate change and preparing students through research and education. On campus, there is a farm-laboratory (that includes a USDA certified organic coffee plot and nursery, among other tropical plants), a coffee tasting laboratory, a butterfly garden and pavillion, a model school garden, and an archeological museum.

Location Information

The campus is located in the town of Utuado. It is a rural area with multiple natural areas for hiking and exploring. Some of this areas include: the Tanama River and caves, Cañon Blanco, Dos Bocas and Caonillas lakes, Cueva Ventana, and the Río Abajo State Forest. UPRU is also in proximity to the Caguana Indigenous Ceremonial Park and other areas with archeological sites. It is less than an hour away from beaches and coastal attractions. It is only 1.5 hours from San Juan and easy to access.
